Everyone from the UNFCCC to our federal government to leading businesses has agreed that net zero is the only destination. Now we have to figure out how to get there. For the first time since COVID-19, the North American sustainability and climate community will converge at GLOBE Forum 2022 in Vancouver to do exactly that.
But that’s not all. With local hubs and virtual programming options, attendees will have access to more ideas and solutions than ever before—and to a network that you won’t find anywhere else.
Keynote Speaker
Mario Rigby
Mario Rigby has always been driven to push the limits. Exploring his entrepreneurial and athletic ambitions since a young age, eventually he was drawn to a grander challenge that led him to pursue an adventure that would allow him to better connect with the world around him. Thus, the Crossing Africa expedition was born: a two year trek across Africa, walking and kayaking from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt.
The expedition allowed Rigby to connect with communities, to learn their stories, and to undertake a mission of bridging the gap between different societies and cultures. His goal is to inspire people around the globe to get out, be brave, and see the world. This incredible journey and the noble cause behind it led to Rigby being inducted into the College of Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in 2020. His latest project saw him exploring his native home of the Turks and Caicos Islands using only human-powered propulsion (swim, run, paddle, and cycle).
Rigby is an advocate for the inclusion of diversity in the outdoors and encourages people to explore the outdoors through sustainable forms of travel. He shares gripping and thought-provoking stories born from his first-hand experiences learning about our common humanity and overcoming fear. In a world that’s rapidly changing, he believes his life lessons are worth sharing and hopes to inspire others to have more courage and address global issues that affect us all.

From Commitment to Action: Net Zero Finance Alliances
Want to see how climate commitment can turn into action? Look no further than the three net-zero finance alliances convened by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI): Net-zero Banking Alliance, Net-zero Asset Owner Alliance and Net-zero Insurance Alliance. Together the three make up over 160 financial institutions representing more than $70 trillion worldwide. Brought together under the UN Race to Zero campaign, they combine action with accountability by requiring financial institution signatories to set near-term targets that add up to the long-term objective of net-zero. Join this session to hear from North American members of these alliances as they discuss: The benefits and challenges of becoming a signatory to a net-zero finance alliance. How the alliances are driving positive, systemic change among financial institutions. Real examples of how alliance members are taking tangible and immediate climate action.

Day 1 (1115-1200)
Climate Tech Investment: Here Comes the Boom
Global commitments to net-zero and consumer demand for sustainable products and services are reinvigorating investor interest in new and existing climate technologies. In fact, UN Climate Envoy Mark Carney says the $100 trillion of investment required over the next three decades to limit warming to 1.5 degrees already exists; it’s just waiting to meet the right net-zero-aligned projects. To some, this comes with a sense of déjà vu. After all, it was just over 10 years ago when we witnessed a similar cleantech boom, only to watch it bottom out five years later. Join this session as experts on the frontlines of net-zero investment consider how this cleantech boom is different than before, and how we keep the momentum going. We'll consider questions like: How can we ensure that this time the upward trends continues, and at an accelerated pace? What do climate tech ventures need to know? What are the remaining barriers to massively scaling climate tech investment?

Lessons from our First Peoples on Reaching Net-zero
Climate changes poses significant risks to Indigenous Peoples and their traditional and contemporary economies, and communities. At the same time, Indigenous Peoples share spiritual, cultural, social, and economic connections with our natural world that uniquely position them to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to climate change. Indigenous Ways of Knowing offer unique and compelling solutions and ideas that Western Knowledge does not. Join us for this session to listen, learn and share about how the leadership and knowledge of First Peoples around the world will help enable a transition to net-zero that is both resilient and just.

Day 1 (1200-1315)
Giving Old Buildings New Life: Municipal Leadership in the Retrofit Economy
To achieve net-zero, we must decarbonize what’s already here: our built environment. After all, greenhouse gases from existing buildings—residential, commercial and community—make up 12 per cent of Canada’s emissions. While there are already technologies and measures to retrofit these buildings—firehalls, libraries, community centres, seniors housing--it can be a complex expensive endeavor, especially at the widescale reach that is required to make net-zero. Don’t miss this lunchtime session as municipal leaders discuss opportunities to scale up building retrofits across Canada, exploring questions like: What are some of the early wins we can take advantage of to retrofit our built environment for a net-zero future? How can we surmount the barriers of implementing these retrofits? Are there case studies or financing models we can learn from to accelerate scaling up the retrofit economy? Presented with Federation of Canadian Municipalities

Day 1 (1330-1430)
Case Studies in Climate Collaboration
In the race to reach net zero, one thing is abundantly clear: reaching our goals will take new and innovative forms of collaboration. Coordinated action will be required across sectors and industries, around boardroom tables, with Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and throughout the halls of government. Join this session to dig into case studies among Indigenous, private and public sector organizations to unpack how we can better collaborate towards a zero-emissions future. We’ll hear lived experiences, best practices and lessons learned, and answer questions like: • How can governments collaborate to accelerate the transition to net-zero? • How can we empower meaningful Indigenous leadership and partnership in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation and shared sustainability goals? • How can industry associations and alliances help us advance scalable carbon neutral solutions? • How can we forge public-private partnerships to drive our climate and carbon neutrality goals? • What (or who) is missing from the current landscape of collaborations, partnerships, and alliances?

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Day 1 (1330-1430)
Doubling Down on Sustainability: Enabling a Circular, Net Zero Future
The race to net zero cannot be held in a single lane. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions must also include equally important sustainability priorities including reducing waste, enhancing biodiversity, and addressing other forms of pollution. In other words, we need to fully activate a circular economy. In this session, we will explore how to balance a net-zero future with a more circular economy digging into hard questions like: • In our haste to reach net-zero, are we intensifying the negative impacts of the more traditional, linear economy? • Are there innovative solutions already available to help meet our net-zero goals and enable a more circular economy? • How can we leverage climate action to move towards more circular business models, and vice versa?

Day 1 (1330-1430)
Nature Positivity: A Climate & Biodiversity Two-for-One
Nature positive. It certainly has a nice ring to it. And it is critical to addressing climate change. The mission was articulated by the G7 leaders as part of the 2030 Nature Compact: "Our world must not only become net-zero, but also nature positive, for the benefit of both people and the planet." The Compact underscored that a nature positive approach enriches biodiversity, stores carbon, purifies water and enhances the resilience of our planet and our societies. In this session, we'll uncover how business leaders are bringing the principles of the Nature Compact to life with questions like: • How are organizations integrating both biodiversity goals and net-zero targets into how they do business? • What are the leading examples of nature positive solutions, in Canada and around the globe? • How can businesses go beyond minimizing impact to enhancing ecosystems?

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Day 1 (1330-1430)
The A-to-Z of ESG: Making Sense of Sustainability Soup
As part of our transition to a net-zero future, financial markets have to put their money where their mouth is by embedding environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into investment approaches. We see efforts to do just this in the almost daily announcements of frameworks, coalitions and advisory groups; these standard-setting bodies are working hard to advance ESG and sustainable financial opportunities. In this session, experts will help make sense of the growing alphabet soup of ESG, with focused questions about how organizations can make climate action a part of how they do business. We’ll explore questions such as: • What are the critical initiatives to watch for in the evolving world of ESG? • What key challenges remain in advancing ESG and climate-aligned approaches? • How can we ensure business leaders view ESG as not just a reporting requirement, but as a business model imperative?

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Day 1 (1330-1430)
The Great Carbon Pricing Debate: Not "Whether" but "How"
At the COP26 UN Climate Change Summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged world leaders to impose a global price on carbon by 2030. Many argue that a widespread price on carbon is the most efficient and effective way to incentivize clean technology innovation and decarbonize our economy. But the "how" of pricing carbon is critical — otherwise it has the potential to impact trade, investment, and competitiveness, and will simply see the costs of carbon passed down to consumers. In this session, we bring the carbon pricing debate to our stage with a focus on the "HOW", including: • How can we minimize negative trade and competitiveness implications of carbon pricing? • What does a price on carbon mean for a just transition to net zero? • How do we ensure carbon pricing holds emitters accountable? • How do we ensure carbon pricing inspires rather than hinders free market entrepreneurial spirit?

Propelling Social Purpose on the Path to Net Zero
These are troubled times. But, as we face the climate emergency, growing social inequality and a global pandemic, we are also greeted with an exciting opportunity to fundamentally change how we do business. As we learn every day, the way things were will no longer work for us in a cleaner, more purpose-driven economy. This very premise is at the core of a longstanding collaboration between GLOBE Series, the Social Purpose Institute at United Way (SPI) and Junxion Strategy. Don’t miss this fireside chat with visionaries from this collaboration, as they explore questions including: What are the latest developments on the purpose driven economy? How can purpose-driven companies accelerate the path to net-zero? What are the successes so far, and how can we build on them?

Day 2 (1115-1200)
Climate vs Consumerism: Purchasing Power on the Path to Net Zero
The things we buy have costs beyond their price tags. A recent study by the Journal of Industrial Ecology showed that the things we buy and the dizzying rate at which we consume accounts for up to 60 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. The global pandemic, a massive container ship blocking the Suez Canal, and floods impeding access to Vancouver’s ports—prompting supply chain issues across all industries—have turned the volume up on the conversation about consumerism and climate change. As we respond to the Covid-19 and climate crises, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rethink consumerism on a worldwide scale. Join us for this session as experts consider questions including: • Can fundamental shifts in our approach to consumption and production be leveraged to deliver on net-zero commitments? • What practical actions are required to put our purchasing power behind the effort to move us to net-zero? • How can players from government, industry and the finance sector play a role in driving these demand-side shifts?

11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Day 2 (1115-1200)
Great Scott! Back to the Future of Global Climate Policy
June 1992 marked a key moment in sustainability history when the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) was held in Rio de Janeiro. Known as the Earth Summit, it set the stage for decades of global climate policy to come–the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, and most recently the Glasgow Climate Pact, which countries from around the world agreed to at COP26. Getting to the net zero future we need will require more than a DeLorean and a bolt of lightning. In this session we'll reflect on the last three decades of global policy commitments and action to help uncover where we need to go next. We’ll hear from experts on questions such as: • Where have we succeeded? • What gaps remain? • What lessons have we learned? • What do these learnings tell us about delivering a net zero future?
-
11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Day 2 (1115-1200)
Global Perspectives on a Just Transition
Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets during COP26 demanding their voices be part of the conversation for a just and equitable net-zero future. We know that those who have contributed least to climate change are often the most vulnerable to its impacts. At the same time, the transformation to net zero leaves some feeling their jobs and livelihoods are at risk. We need to ensure that no one is left behind in the race to net zero. In this session we'll hear a diversity of perspectives discussing: • Opportunities to meaningfully include and empower those who are most susceptible to a changing climate and the transformation to net zero; • Fair compensation for the loss and damages sustained by the most vulnerable; • The creation of spaces and platforms on just transition where diverse input is welcomed and accessible.

Day 2 (1330-1430)
The Nuclear Option on the Road to Net Zero
Is Canada ready to take its commitment to net-zero nuclear? Many Canadians think so. As one of the world’s largest uranium producers and with its unique, globally recognized CANDU reactor technology, the country is already positioned to lead in the advancement of small modular reactors (SMRs). And yet there is not a single SMR currently deployed in Canada. Join us as we discuss why the jury is still out on the role of nuclear power in meeting Canada’s net-zero commitment, answering questions such as: • How do SMRs compare to renewable technologies that are ready to be deployed today? • What important lessons can be learned from Canada’s long history in nuclear power? • How must Canada's nuclear industry adapt and adjust to be SMR-ready?
-
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Day 2 (1330-1430)
The Just Transition: Preparing People for the Emerging New Economy
It’s about more than getting to net zero. We must carefully balance the economic needs of all workers and communities as move ahead, so no one is left on the outside or, even worse, behind. This “just transition” means a cleaner economy for all: communities, groups, and those otherwise under-represented and most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Embedding these individuals in the training and new skillset development required to sustain the new, net-zero economy is the best way to do this. Join us for this session as we: Can existing education and training programs satisfy the needs of a net zero economy? How can we embed skills and training for a clean and just transition into academic programming? What new approaches to leadership training are required to ensure an equitable net-zero future?
-
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Day 2 (1330-1430)
Jumping the Curve: the "Next Big Deal" for an Electrified Future
Does the solution to net-zero transportation already exist? To many, the answer is yes: widespread electrification. So why aren't we farther along the electrification curve? It's true that many of the required technologies and skillsets for zero emissions transportation are already available. But to really "jump the curve" we need to accelerate the development of critical charging infrastructure—and we need to do it in a big way. Join us as we explore "the Next Big Deal" required for the rapid scaling of zero emissions transportation. We'll explore questions for a path forward including: • What are the next big partnerships, deals or investments required to “jump the curve” when it comes to charging infrastructure? • Who needs to drive these deals forward? Who else should be at the table? • How do we pay for it and what is the potential return?
